  17. <p>     Each semester, students at the Philadelphia College of
  18. Textiles and Science develop products to help people with special
  19. needs. In years past they have stuffed caterpillars for children
  20. with cerebral palsy to heighten their sense of touch. But the
  21. school's latest project may represent the ultimate combination
  22. of altruism and design: an overcoat for homeless people that can
  23. double as a sleeping bag.
  24. </p>
  25. <p>     Known as a Shelter-Pak, the hooded, full-length garment is
  26. covered with rip-proof nylon on one side and heavy wool on the
  27. other. Depending on how it's folded, it can convert from
  28. nighttime bedroll to daytime parka or even a backpack. Each
  29. Shelter-Pak contains a deep pocket that is almost as capacious
  30. as a duffel bag. Eighty of the garments have been distributed
  31. to homeless people in Philadelphia, and the students plan to
  32. turn out at least 200 more this year. Vows Assistant Professor
  33. Matthew Mehrman: "We are going to keep making Shelter-Paks until
  34. the problem of the homeless is resolved." Better keep the
  35. production lines open, guys.
